New Church Road, Portland Road and Poets Corner Guide
West Hove is a sprawling area to (that's right) the west of the city linking central Hove with Portslade. Many of the residents in this area take complete advantage the quieter beaches found along the front and the area seems to have a bigger connection to the sea than much of Brighton. Large houses take up much of the housing stock along New Church Road, while Poets Corner offers more traditional Victorian homes. Portland Road is a wide tree-lined high street covering all the essentials for local residents while there are several parks in the area. The newly developed Hove Beach Park and Hove Lagoon are perhaps the most impressive with padel courts, tennis courts, a skate park and watersports on the lagoon.
Best pub
We've always loved The Stoneham on Portland Road. Charming pub, plenty of space, decent food.
Best place to eat
We may be cheating a bit but if Sackville Road is the boundary slightly cross over and find The Urchin on Belfast Street. Possibly the best seafood in Brighton & Hove.
Best thing to see or do
Given the current trend we'd have to say Padel on the seafront - if you can secure a court!
Best Kept Secret
Hove Deep Sea Anglers Club. Funny little place, not much to look at, right on the beach. It's a private members club and its tiny. You'll need to join the waiting list I'm afraid. Those that know about it, love it.
Reason to live there
Poets Corner is a fantastic location for families. Attractive Victorian terraced houses make up the majority of the housing with a smaller number of converted flats. Portland Road is nearby and is an area that is very much ‘on the up’, while Aldrington Station provides a useful connection for commuters. The larger houses to the south bring that connection to the sea, as well as offering larger gardens and more often than not, off-street parking.
